In 2004 we happened to visit Croatia on holiday and fell in love with the vibrant and exciting city of Split. Within days we had decided that we should buy a property in Split for us to enjoy and also create a place that visitors to the city would like to stay. With a little help and a little luck we soon found an old house in the Veli Varoš quarter of central Split that was ideal for the project – and we formed a Croatian company through which we could purchase, renovate and manage it. We named the company Bugenvilija d.o.o. after the beautiful purple bougainvillea growing in the courtyard garden of the house and we set about renovating the original features of the house and adding the conveniences that we all expect nowadays, even on vacation.
Having found a local builder with a great eye for both function and aesthetics (thanks Zlatko), and with the help of some excellent local advisors, specialist contractors and suppliers, we returned the building as near as possible to its original look and feel. Upstairs we were able to create a light, bright studio apartment and, keeping to the theme, named it after the rambling grape vine covering the small courtyard garden – a “loza” in Croatian.
Many tourists have since rented Studio Loza for their vacation in Split and enjoyed its large terrace and quaint setting just a stone’s throw from the Riva and Diocletian’s Palace. Studio Loza has also been home to long-term guests over winter months, including business people and those staying a while in Split to visit family.
Along with us here in London we have a local team in Split who look after the property day-to-day and are on hand to deal with any problems or questions guests may have.
